Perfume bottles
What is refraction?
In the escape room, perfume bottles contained hidden numbers that became visible when the bottles were tilted and no longer immersed in the liquid. This effect is explained by refraction.
Refraction is the change in direction of a wave, such as light or sound, when it crosses the boundary between two different media. This is why glass is visible even though it is transparent. Everyday tools, like magnifying glasses, rely on this bending of light, while rough glass surfaces scatter light, preventing a clear image. The numbers were hidden because the refraction index of the oil was very close to that of the plastic that made the numbers. In other words, light beams did not bend between the oil and the number, thus rendering them invisible.
In the puzzle, refraction allowed the hidden numbers in the bottles to appear when viewed at the right angle.
